Blingdenstone's royal vaults held rough maps that outlined the many passageways in and out of the city.Stores that sold traveling supplies, such as Elgath's Provisions in Archenbridge, often sold maps, while some shops like Maskado's Maps & Legends in Neverwinter and Esklindrar's Maps, Books, & Folios in Yartar specialized in maps, books, and other records of information. These were navigational charts for crystal spheres and the phlogiston and were considered necessary to have if one wished to navigate the skyways accurately. Just as there existed these charts for the oceans of Toril that ships relied upon, there existed starcharts that spelljammers relied upon. Often they drew these while consulting the map of another captain, who watched over their work and charged them a stiff fee. This was done by using a candle or burning quill to singe markings into the cured, durable hide of a bull. Nautical maps - which were typically the most crude and inaccurate, yet most valuable of maps - were often drawn by sea captains themselves. Maps were often printed on scrolls that could be rolled up, and stored in a map tube or map case. ![]() ![]() Alternatively, map-making kits allowed any layperson to attempt making their own maps. This fee also tended to be roughly half or a third of the price that the scribe would charge their client for the finished copy. This fee covered the time involved for someone to bring them the map and watch over them as they worked. They were made by limners (painters or portrait drawers), court heralds, and scribes who had to pay an access fee, sometimes per map. Many of the maps available in the Realms were simplified copies of maps from the large collections of courts, temples, and private individuals. 5.2.6 Organized Play & Licensed Adventures. ![]()

![]() ![]() Instead of representing the data in a text form, I’d store everything as individual rows in an SQLite DB and retrieve data to present to the user when they loaded up the web page. This first app didn’t really require anything specific from EVE other than the authentication & authorization everything else was generic enough. A quick web searched showed that Python had several active frameworks for building web servers, so I picked the biggest - Django - and got to work. Back when I coded for Minecraft servers, a fellow programmer had suggested that I get into Python, as it was their favorite language, certainly more than Java. Getting into EVE’s APIsĪs a budding programmer, actively searching for some place to delve into and continue writing code for other people, I figured that it’d be a good time to start learning web development. There were a few options that provided everything except the authentication & authorization, but as those two feature were the most important, no alternative was found. The leaders of the corporation searched for alternatives, but came up short, as the requirements for what we needed were pretty strict: must be visible by a group of people, but editable by a subset of that group must have a higher character limit than the in-game one must allow coloring and formatting. As tracking this information was critical to players’ (in-game) safety, this invisible deletion of hard-earned information was quite debilitating. When the editor saved, the game would simply trim the content size down to the limit, and save that whatever was over the limit was lost. As our experience and exploration increased though, we ran into a problem - this “notepad” had a character limit.Īlthough many people these days are used to character limits (Twitter basically having been built on one), the character limit in these “notepads” did not have a good user experience: when the editor would go over the limit, there was no visual indicator that they were over. It is in this “notepad” that we kept track of everything that was going on. We recorded this information in an in-game chat channel message of the day (effectively a notepad that anyone in the corporation could see but only a few could edit). Finding a problemĪ big part of “wormholes” was tracking them - if players didn’t explore them and record where they led, then other players would have no way of knowing what was going on (wormholes appeared and disappeared (mostly) randomly). It’s there that I found a community to really be a part of, something I hadn’t had for years (since helping run a Minecraft server for several years, which is where I picked up Java). In September of 2012, just shy of a year since I started playing, I entered a corporation (a guild, effectively) called Wormbro, a corporation that was designed to help players new to the game or new to wormholes to get their “space legs” and get used to the gameplay. You never knew what was going to be happening in a few hours. Without spending hours explaining what that entails, basically I had gotten interested in a part of the game that was built on randomness - who you were near, who was near you, and what was going on all fluctuated on a day-to-day, hour-to-hour basis. Regardless of how I stumbled across EVE, I played it off and on for a year before getting into wormholes. I’ve always liked space and spaceships, maybe that’s what got me interested? Maybe it was other people talking about how much fun they were having? Maybe it was one of EVE’s huge thousand+ player battles? I think I had heard of it from reddit, but it’s so long ago now that I really can’t pinpoint what got me to pay for (it was subscription-only back then) and play the game. ![]() I first got into Eve back in October of 2011. Eve Online’s APIs and how they got me interested in SQL, Python, webdev, yaml, Linux, Nginx, DigitalOcean, and more. ![]() ![]() Such a reception at Cannes can often be a badge of honor – L’Avventura and Taxi Driver also got an earful – and Lynch would get booed again when he premiered Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me at the festival two years later. ![]() ![]() Thirty years ago, Wild at Heart arrived in theaters after winning the Palme D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was greeted, according to the critic Dave Kehr, with “the most violent chorus of boos and hisses to be heard in a decade”. The forces of good and evil that Lynch had limited to a small town four years earlier with Blue Velvet are blown out into the larger expanse of the American road. That uneasiness is the lifeblood of Wild at Heart, which sets a love of the purest and most passionate kind against a sun-scorched landscape of ceaseless hostility. The appeal of road movies is that they allow for a certain amount of narrative spontaneity, with every exit teasing the possibility of a new and unexpected subplot. The sequence is Wild at Heart in microcosm, with the AM stations representing treacherous pitstops on the lost highways between a deep south correctional facility and sunny California, where Sailor and Lula hope to carve out some place for themselves. Romance pokes through the violence and discord like a bloom through cracks in the pavement. And then suddenly, the adrenalized thump of Powermad’s Slaughterhouse fades out and the lush strings of Richard Strauss overwhelm the soundtrack. As the two thrash along in the embankment – Sailor, with his karate-kick dancing style, seems like a terror in nightclubs – Lynch’s camera cranes upwards to a magic-hour sunset across the field. “Sailor Ripley, you get me some music on that radio this instant!” she screams, and he obliges, scanning past more talk-radio mayhem before landing, improbably, on a track by the Minneapolis speed metal band Powermad. Despite this, all in all, they were both relatively good films, and definitely the kind of wilder love stories that more adventurous couples may prefer to lean into in order to elevate the subversive personas of their own relationships.Lula pulls the car over in disgust. Wild at Heart is ultiamtely a deconstruction of the fantasy-romance of movies, using The Wizard of Oz has a template, and Natural Born Killers was a deconstruction of the media and the cultural obsession with violence both were meditations on America in the '90s, though the latter film is arguably the better. However, Wild at Heart' s attempt to eschew the raw nature of the film by reigning in the finale and lending it a happier, more romantic ending tended to come out a little counterintuitively for the edgy genre it flirted with throughout the rest of it. Both films certainly shared a penchant for violent realism held together by chaotic and messy relationships that would give the Joker and Harley Quinn a run on the crazy meter. Despite being criticized for its "psychedelic" and often crazed scenes, the movie went on to become a cult classic. On the run from authorities and anyone else who would stop them, the rebellious pair drives through Lynch’s fantasyland of incendiary violence, rabid sex, and references to The Wizard of Oz-the lot of it described best by Dern’s character: “This whole world is wild at heart and weird on top.” A strange blend of goofy humor and frighteningly dark situations, Wild at Heart reeks with the smell of cigarettes, sexual abandon, bloody violence, bad teeth, and vomit.ĭespite both movies being very similar, Natural Born Killers likely edges out Wild at Heart in a straight comparison between the two. This Bonnie and Clyde-esque road movie and love story features Nicolas Cage as a criminal Elvis wannabe and Laura Dern as his white-trash goddess. Despite the seemingly sweet ending that harks at a romantic twist, this twisted romance film had a sexy edge with plenty of raunchy scenes and sexualized dialogue, was laced with profanity, and had some pretty severe violence in it too.Īs a great way to sum it all up, here's what Brian Eggert said about the film in an introduction to his piece in Deep Focus Review:ĭavid Lynch achieves combustible, grotesque poetry in Wild at Heart, the director’s highly divisive film from 1990. ![]() ![]() A weird interaction causes him to experience an epiphany that makes him go back for them. By the end of the film, Sailor rejects her and their son and tries to leave them, ostensibly for what he believes is their own good. ![]() ![]() ![]() Due to this success, Interplay, the publisher of Baldur's Gate, asked CD Projekt if they could do a similar treatment to Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, a console title released in 2001. Their first major success was with Baldur's Gate (1998) with which they had 18,000 units sold on its first day of release in Poland. They would then package the game with localized instruction manuals and other physical goodies, hoping that the added features would draw buyers away from pirated copies. They would obtain import rights from foreign publishers, and where possible, provide in-game localization for text and voice lines, typically through reverse engineering to decompile the game's code. ĬD Projekt was founded by Marcin Iwiński and Michał Kiciński in 1994 for the purposes to trying to bring legitimate sales of foreign game titles into Poland, knowing they would have no easy way to compete against pirated copies. Related: Types of Economists (With Common Duties and Career FAQs) 3 stages of diminishing marginal returns In 1845, Francis Edgeworth pioneered the clear distinction between the average and marginal products of a variable resource. In 1772, David Ricardo applied the law to the rent of agricultural land and he demonstrated how additional labour and capital added to a piece of land continuously generates smaller increases in output. He argued that a population outgrows its food supply due to the disproportionate increase in population versus food production. Thomas Malthus, who many people regard as one of the first economists to develop the law of diminishing returns, applied the law to agriculture in 1766. This concept plays a huge part in the population theory and the theory of rent as people understand and apply them today. This idea also connects to some of the world's earliest economists, including Johann Heinrich von Thunen, Thomas Robert Malthus, David Ricardo, and James Anderson. The first mention of the concept of diminishing returns on record came from Jacques Turgot in the 1700s. Related: What Is Conditional Probability? For the theory to be valid, there are some assumptions to describe the event: What happens is it doesn't increase at the rate that it did in the past. In the law of diminishing marginal returns, the output doesn't necessarily decrease. Assumptions of diminishing marginal returns law The secondary factors include materials and energy that become a part of the end product or which the production process uses or transforms. ![]() While they facilitate the production process, the production process doesn't transform or convert them and they don't end up as parts of the end products. These work together to translate input into finished goods or services and compose the primary classification. The factors of production include three basic resources, which are land, labour, and capital. Related: What Is Diminishing Marginal Utility? (With Examples) The factors of production Economists may also refer to this theory as the Law of Variable Proportions, Law of Increasing Costs, or Principle of Diminishing Marginal Productivity. In the long term, these factors may change because of their variable characteristics. This theory applies only in the short term because most of the other production factors remain fixed. In some cases, hiring more people results in a decrease in efficiency because of less workspace and a disorganized production process. The additional unit or factor of production may refer to additional equipment and personnel. At this level, adding a source of output may lead to higher costs but lower returns. It refers to a level wherein they are getting maximum profit at the lowest cost. The optimal level of production means that the company maintains a balance between its revenues and expenses. In economics, the law of diminishing marginal returns predicts that at an optimal level of production capacity, increasing the unit or adding a factor of production while holding other factors constant results in lower output levels or lower increases in the output rate.
